♦️ Synopsis ♦️
Work-life balance for a spy may be an oxymoron, but Jack Reardon likes a good challenge. And he’s almost bested this one. He’s settled into his Meta-State promotion as a field leader and into his new team with a second he can trust. Shop in order, he can take a day or two off when Ethan blows into town, their bargain finally starting to paying off.
Assassin Ethan Blade has few pleasures in his life—a decent cup of tea, a job well done, racing his fleet of supercars, and Jack. With plans to combine the last two into one thrilling weekend, Ethan’s attempt at having a normal, happy life may deliver everything he’s ever desired—or backfire spectacularly.
Jack and Ethan made a bargain, but the deal is thrown into jeopardy when the expectations and identities of the dealmakers shift—stoking the fires of doubt and jealously. Not to mention a contract killer out for revenge and an illness that threatens to reveal closely guarded secrets. Rewards are on the table for both men, maybe bigger than they even realize, if only they can renegotiate—and survive.

♦️ Riina’s Review ♦️
You guys! Meta-State spy Jack Reardon and contract killer Ethan Blade are back and it’s absolutely fantastic, probably the most exciting one [novella] yet!
Just like the previous ebooks, this installment includes more than one story —“When the Devil Drives” and “At Death’s Door” — and covers a timeframe of two months (April & May).
As Jack and Ethan’s adventure continues we’re joining the guys on a weekend trip to the Gold Coast where Ethan is taking part in a charity race with Victoria, his beloved black Aston Martin Vanquish S Coupe! How exciting, am I right?! Remember how much Ethan loves his cars? Exactly! And racing, well, it’s Ethan’s Zen place and he’s decided to bring Jack along for the ride, quite literally. *Sigh*
From the moment they arrive at the event Jack is struggling with a mix of fascination, shock and jealousy this unexpected version of Ethan Blade evokes in him, the well-adjusted guy who is friendly, gives hugs and kisses on cheeks in greeting and makes people smile, the one who everyone knows as Roy Carter, investment banker from Sydney.
As much fun as they’re having, there is also trouble for them waiting around the corner in form of another assassin!
In this book, their relationship type thing — Jack’s words, not mine — continues to grow further and Jack is falling deeper and deeper for Ethan-fucking-Blade. *Screaming Internally*
With a muffled thump, that grenade in Jack’s chest went off again.
Their moments together are lovely as always, sigh, their chemistry is off the charts; I’m completely addicted to their romance!
He wound his fingers through Ethan’s, feeling him grip back, as desperate, as tight. Burying his face in Ethan’s neck, he locked his lips on the pulse thrumming under the corner of his jaw so he wouldn’t do other, silly, things with his mouth.
Ha, and as expected, Jack’s still in denial. Dude!
I have to admit, I needed to refresh my memory and was surprised to find out that Jack and Ethan had met almost two years ago at this point (by the end of the novella in May). Seventeen months to be precise! Wow. Talk about how time flies! =D
Wish You Were Here?
Not gonna lie, I’m probably the biggest Ethan Blade fan ever! Well, Jack might have some objections to that, or rather, he’d tie me up and ship me off to Brazil if he found out!
Mr. Blade is still a riddle wrapped in a mystery behind dark shades and I can’t help but adore the shit outta the guy ❤
Sorry, not sorry, Jack.
Man! I’m enjoying the hell out of these bite-sized short stories.
Jack and Ethan are back in October with: Devil in the Details (Death and the Devil, #1.8) including the stories La Petite Mort, Devil in the Details and Death Takes a Holiday.
And December will bring us Why the Devil Stalks Death (Death and the Devil, #2)!
I adore the Death and the Devil series — I haven’t read anything like it, and nothing as exciting in maybe ever!
Many, many thanks to L.J. Hayward who kindly provided a free copy for an honest and impartial review.
